Is IV Sedation Safe for Kids?

At Sleep Dentistry Brisbane, we take measures to help ensure that sedation dentistry is safe for your child. For example, we may take a health history, including known allergies, current medications and diagnosed conditions.

For children, we offer nitrous oxide, a relaxing gas that helps patients of all ages feel relaxed and at ease. Nitrous is administered through a nose mask and has no lingering effects. Once the mask is removed, your child can return to school or play.

We can discuss general anesthesia administered in a hospital environment for more involved dental treatments or for children who feel anxious. With general anesthesia, your child may sleep and not recall their treatment at all. General anesthesia lingers in the system, so your child should rest at home for the remainder of the day.

During sedation, we monitor children closely.

Why Sedation Dentistry Might Be a Good Option for Your Child

We recommend sedation dentistry for children for several reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Your child is frightened of the dental clinic setting.
  • Your child is undergoing multiple, lengthy treatments.
  • Your child is fidgety and has an easy gag response.

An essential benefit of sedation dentistry is that it can prevent dental phobia in your child, which may last into adulthood and keep them from visiting the dentist. We want your child to enjoy coming to our dental clinic and never want them to be afraid.
